The house and the woods

The Lineage of Wolf claims Eldergate and the surrounding wild as its stage. Family lore begins with Sir Roylan Wolf (often remembered as Roland) — knight of the ancient wars that shaped the Span, hunter and guardian of the forest roads, a man said to love both justice and the chase.

Centuries on, that same blood still keeps the manor. The estate is where sons learn the bow before the ballroom; where trophies of the Verdant Woods hang above cold hearths; where the name Wolf means who tracks what others lose.

The manor’s greatest recent glory came when Mastiff slew Shadowclaw, the dire wolf that haunted Eldergate’s outskirts — a deed that filled the great hall with new songs and older expectations.

The household

The father — master of Wolf Manor

The living patriarch of the manor is Penn and Mastiff’s father: head of a wealthy line of hunters and trackers, lord of the estate that raised them both.

After the death of Mastiff’s mother, he took a half-elf lover. From that union came Penn — younger than Mastiff by a few years, half-elf, a living reminder that the house had changed. To the father, Penn was renewal. To Mastiff, as years passed, Penn became the face of a second family he never asked for.

In 589, the patriarch sent Penn away from the manor to serve the noble Hawthorne household in Mystwall — duty, polish, and distance from the tensions under his own roof. There Penn’s fate tangled with Lady Zolina Hawthorne (Zoi), whom he came to regard almost as a sister, and later with Tama in a secret affection he kept from Mastiff (Penn’s Letter).

Mastiff — the elder son

Mastiff the Hunter (Mastifson Wolf in the family reckoning) grew up on the manor’s trails: wealthy, skilled, and taught that the wild was something to master. The estate made him a legend and a hard man — haughty to villagers who hated his crueler hunts, brilliant in the deep wood, bound forever to rivalry and reluctant respect with Tama.

Wolf Manor is the place that forged him: kennels, trophy beams, the expectation that the elder son would carry Sir Roylan’s shadow. When resentment toward his father’s new household grew, the manor’s halls held that silence too — laughter with Penn in childhood, then a widening gap neither boy could fully name.

Penn — the younger son

Penn Wolf was raised under the same roof and the same name, but never quite the same story. Half-elf grace, aristocratic manners, a lighter frame for court than for the kill — yet still a Wolf of the manor until his father placed him with the Hawthornes of Mystwall.

He remains, in every telling that matters, a son of this house: brother to Mastiff, child of the patriarch’s second love, and later a victim of the Cult of the Nameless One far from the Verdant Woods — taken for noble blood toward the Sacrament at the serpent fortress, a death that emptied more than one heart at the Bastion.

Life at the manor

• The hall: trophies and guest-boards; stories of Shadowclaw and other beasts told until they become law for the young.
• The fracture: one hearth, two mothers’ shadows — Mastiff’s dead mother, Penn’s half-elven blood — love and resentment sharing the same long table.
• The sending: Penn’s departure to Mystwall and Hawthorne service — the manor quieter, Mastiff freer of a brother he could not stop measuring, and the house poorer for it.
