At a glance
Sethemyre is not a living castle of courts and banners. It is a reclaimed citadel — snake icons hewn into the mountain, towers hanging like fangs, gates like a serpent’s maw — used by purebloods, halfbloods, and abominations of the Yuan-ti as the field headquarters of the Cult of the Nameless One.
From here the cult harvests hellish writs (infernal contracts and ledgers of claimed souls), feeds the Sacrament, and keeps open the dark engines of the fortress: the towers of Way, Word, and Worlds — and above all the black Ziggurat of Souls.
History
Before the Span — a forgotten citadel
In the time before the Epochian Span rose as it is now known, the Yuan-ti held a home in what later folk call the Arborehold Spine and its forests. A citadel slept under the mountain — not yet named Sethemyre in common speech — until the first men pressed into Eastern Valtara. Heroes and settlers drove the serpent-folk out; the halls were abandoned, half-swallowed by stone and silence.Ages later the Cult of the Nameless One returned. Their faith holds that an ancient snake god — partner to the maker of the universe, cast out for evil — can be mended by sacrifice. The Nameless Serpent showed them the old citadel again. They made it their headquarters: a place to sacrifice devils’ paper and stolen souls toward the god’s restoration. Many purebloods left the secluded jungles of Daithron for this work; other races who shared the devotion were recruited into the shadows.
(For campaign structure and “why Mystwall / why Mathias,” see The Yuan-ti and the companion notes in Seythamere Part 1.)
The Mystwall years — writs, mistresses, and a quiet pipeline
Mystwall, a produce-and-livestock town under Sir Ayden Mioneth, became the cult’s soft outer face. Yuan-ti infestation ran under the streets and dens; Altheria was cursed by the cult with a growing serpent in her flesh until adventurers cut the plot short. The cult needed hellish contracts. For years a bargain held:
- Clerics of Hextor (and allies such as the Dark Cleric line) funneled writs toward Brother Mathias (see also Session 022: Mystwall and Mathias).
- Mathias amassed an adamantine-warded hoard of hellish writs — later tied to the wider Black Writ questline.
- Through the Mistresses (triplets of the cult’s outer face; one was slain as The Mistress / Mistress Eseha’s circle), the papers reached the Yuan-ti.
- Karstan bartered between Mathias’s network and the cult — a pipeline that kept the Yuan-ti “at bay” for roughly five years while feeding Sethemyre’s appetite.
Hell itself took notice. Infernal charges against Mathias name the crime plainly: conspiracy with the Yuan-ti to destroy hellish contracts and nullify souls claimed by the Pit (Charges Against Brother Matthias Hawthorn). Mathias’s ghost later claimed he sought to free souls — that he had seen contracts come undone — and trusted a stranger who could unmake them.
The fortress reawakens — captives, doubles, and the Sacrament
Pressure rose. The party’s early blows against the snake-den and the Mistresses enraged the cult. Yuan-ti began striking harder: taking forms of the living, devouring guards, marching captives east over the mountains into slave villages beneath the fortress cliffs (Seythamere Part 1).Penn Wolf was abducted for noble blood and dark design under Sulvagren, Chosen of the Nameless One (see also Penn and Session 044). Zolina Hawthorne (Zoi) was taken and impersonated; doubles spoke in Mystwall while the true woman languished among captives near Sethemyre’s shadow.
Within the fortress the cult prepared the Sacrament — a rite meant to raise an aspect of the Unnameable God (linked in notes to avatars such as the Risen King and the old legend of Sibyl, an abomination who once became avatar for Seth, the Nameless One). Completing it threatened powers spoken of in the same breath as Demogorgon — enough that rival demon-faithful (e.g. Maz and the circle of Arzanezra) sought to disrupt Sulvagren’s work.
Assault on Sethemyre (table history)
In Session 044: Fortress of the Yuan-ti, the party marched east from Mystwall, found the captive village, unmasked the Zoi-deception, and entered the serpent castle. At the gates they faced a Yuan-ti Ignan (falchion and fire) and forced their way inward through towers and chambers. On the third level they beheld the black ziggurat. Portals, acolytes, scrying through stolen armor, and the lizardfolk druid’s counsel of Tower of the Way, Tower of the Word, and Tower of Worlds mark this assault as the first time modern heroes mapped Sethemyre’s living threat — not as a ruin of myth, but as a working temple of writs and souls.
Later notes from Hextor’s remaining circle claim the Ziggurat can void writs, but that killing the Nameless One’s champion and severing the power broke the easy path (The Dark Cleric). The fortress remains a scar on the map of the Span — and a keystone of the Black Writ war between hell, heresy, and the serpent god.
The Ziggurat of Souls
What it is
A black ziggurat within Sethemyre — described in the table report as some thirty feet of dark stone, with portal mouths opening northward and only some of them lit with arcane fire. Infernal script and crumbling parchments cling to its flanks: rituals of the Nameless One’s faithful, not of lawful hell’s own courts.
What it does
The Ziggurat of Souls is the cult’s answer to damnation’s paperwork. Where hell files a claim, the ziggurat dissolves devil contracts — unbinding or unmaking hellish writs so that souls chained by infernal ledger may slip free (or be re-fed to the Nameless Serpent’s mending). That is why:
- Mathias and the Dark Cleric sought writs to destroy them, not to sell them.
- Hell’s charges call Mathias a traitor for conspiring with Yuan-ti to nullify contracts (Charges…).
- Hextor’s priests pointed to the ziggurat as a voiding engine — until the Sacrament’s power was broken at the fortress (The Dark Cleric).
- The Black Writ questline collides here: ledgers naming which archdevil holds a loved one’s soul become fuel for a god that is not of the Nine Hells.
GM note: The ziggurat is not a kindness. Freeing a soul from Dispater or Glasya may only deliver it to the Nameless One’s hunger. The fortress thrives on that ambiguity.
Structure & defenses (what is known)
- Approach: mountain approaches east of Mystwall; slave village and captives below the cliffs; snake-hewn mountain face (Session 044).
- Gate: serpent maw; champions such as the Ignan twins Gidrius and Lusudrus.
- Inner works: multi-level keep and hanging towers — usable with Castle Serastis maps and notes for rooms, secret doors, and yuan-ti tactics.
- Towers named in play: Way (portals), Word, Worlds — interconnected depths of arcane mystery.
- Heart of the cult: the black Ziggurat of Souls and the chambers of the Sacrament under Sulvagren’s hand.

Sethemyre stands where old serpent-stone meets the Span’s modern war over souls: a fortress that eats hell’s contracts so a god without a name may heal — and so every black writ in a hero’s pack becomes a key to its gates.
